Imagined interiors – imagined collections

Cabinet paintings showing an (art) collection in interior developed as a genre the early seventeenth century Antwerp. The depicted could be actual art imagined, idealized interior, or, more metaphorically, it also fictional of paintings, sculptures, scientific instruments, silverwork, textiles, and naturalia such flowers or shells. Jan Bruegel Elder (1568–1625) Pieter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), among others, used this series illustrating five senses. These imagined interiors influenced caprices by Panini Piranesi cityscape that is collage buildings, ruins, archaeological fragments. In essay, we relate these representations collections – objects well architectural fragments with scenography (house) museums. We consider two house museums particular: architect collector Sir John Soane London Museum Innocence writer Orhan Pamuk Istanbul.
